By Robert James is an independent American menswear brand, designed and made with purpose by Robert James. Now in our 17th year, we continue to focus on timeless, handsome garments with a tough, independent twist.

Born in the heart of New York City’s downtown fashion and music scenes, By Robert James first made its mark through our iconic brick-and-mortar locations. There, we served locals, artists, musicians, and world travelers—building an avid following of those who appreciate quality, style, and authenticity.

As the city evolved, so did we. By Robert James pivoted to a streamlined, e-commerce model while keeping our core values intact. We’ve adopted a “Less is More” approach, releasing new products on a monthly, linear basis rather than traditional seasonal collections. Each piece tells its own story, crafted with precision and care in small, highly limited runs that keep us fresh, relevant, and exclusive.

What has never changed—and never will—is where and how we make our clothes.

By Robert James garments are made in New York City’s historic Garment Center. 99% of our collections have been cut, sewn, and finished in NYC, with 80% crafted by our original factory partners. Our commitment to NYC manufacturing isn’t just about geography. It’s about supporting the artisans, pattern makers, and small businesses who form the backbone of American fashion history. Together, we are preserving a legacy that once made New York the world’s capital of garment production—and fighting to ensure it survives and thrives for years to come.
