From day one, By Robert James has been about custom. When I opened my first shop, I had just $15K to make it all happen—barely enough for a collection of graphic tees and my first run of woven shirts. But I knew that to create something truly special, I needed to go beyond mass production.
So, I started making jackets one by one. I’d design a pattern, cut it myself, and my tailor, Anna, would stitch it together in our tiny basement workspace—just enough room for a sewing machine and a makeshift cutting table (aka a repurposed door from the common area). I’d put the finished jacket in the shop window and wait, hoping someone would notice and ask about it. Sure enough, they did.
With only one sample on hand, the conversation naturally turned to customization—what worked, what didn’t, what they wanted. That back-and-forth process shaped my first sport coats, suits, jeans, and trousers. It was a direct collaboration between me and my customers, right there in the shop, refining and perfecting each design together.
That collaborative spirit of custom has never left By Robert James. It has evolved. It has grown. And now, it’s set to take on an even bigger role in 2025.
